Learning to see the beauty in everything has been one of my most valuable lessons. As I compose this blog post, I feel incredibly blessed. Nothing changed in my acquisitions of material possessions, I did not receive a raise or promotion recently, I was not graced with good news and I did not have a major life change. The change was a mental shift in my perspective.
Confucius stated that “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” For me, I see the beauty in my husband’s eyes and in my son’s smile. I see how much my friends and family love, care for and support me. I am surrounded by the most amazing people and that is a truly beautiful thing. I have two of the most supportive parents who have served as cheerleaders for me throughout all my life’s endeavors. I have a great relationship with my siblings and we have ongoing communication. I am married to the most amazing man I know. He is full of integrity, discipline and standards. It also helps that he is a beauty himself! My toddler brings absolute joy to my life. And my friends…. Oh my friends, it is an understatement to call them friends because they are so much more. They are more than family!
Is the feeling of thanksgiving fleeting? Have you ever gone on vacation, came back feeling refreshed and then went to work on a stressful day and then all the gratitude you once felt dissipated? How do you hold on to the feeling of gratitude?
Some have recommended gratitude journals, meditation and positive thinking. If this is implemented as a lasting change, I can see how it will be beneficial. I think what matters is that we make gratitude a lifestyle. If you get a great parking spot or catch your train, be thankful. In everything, give thanks. Not for everything but in everything. If you feel stuck or hear bad news, it’s hard to see the positive but you can be thankful for all the other things that are working right.
See the beauty in everything and eventually your habit will become a lifestyle of gratitude.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11
